GO SOULAR traveled to Joplin, Missouri to help with tornado clean up from July 23rd - 30th, 2011. There really are no words to fully explain what our Joplin journey was like. We were surrounded by so much love and gratitude, SURROUNDED. Wherever we turned people would be hugging us, sharing their stories, honking at our van & waving their thanks, or greeting us with tears in their eyes because they are so grateful that people like us were still showing up and helping their small town.
We were also surrounded by volunteers from all across the globe, church groups & charities working together in fields of destruction, construction workers beginning the rebuilding efforts and AmeriCorps, United Way and Relief Sparks groups organizing and feeding the tens of thousands of volunteers who just kept coming. Also, the Red Cross trucks would circle each day offering free water and snacks to all the volunteers. Talk about people banning together as ONE. It was awe-inspiring to see such an outpouring of love, willingness and service all in one place. It was everywhere. Just everywhere...
Similar to other GO SOULAR trips, we began each day with prayer, meditation and setting personal intentions, and then we headed out to the worksites to serve in whatever way we were asked. In Joplin, we helped clear playgrounds, remove debris, created piles of wood, metail, bricks, clothing, stuffed animals as well as finding personal photos, keepsakes, drivers licenses and legal documents.
